well, the "make the moon" level is big. really, really big. the goal in 500m and I've gotten to 3550m. it's got New York, Hollywood, London, France, and China. it is the only level that has anything near uber-growth, but the growth in this one is just massive.

there are also a lot of novelty levels in this one. there's one level where your katamari is a ball of fire and you have to keep rolling things up or it'll go out. there's one level underwater where the physics are different and you float more. there's a level where you're on a racetrack and your katamari goes at uber-speed. there's one where your katamari is a sumo wrestler and you roll up food until you get big enough to knock this other huge sumo wrestler out of the ring. yet another one is where your score is based on how much things are worth. I've gotten up to like five million yen. there's really not much else you can do to vary the game than offer ridiculous novelty levels, but they're fun.

That sounds cool. I guess they're saving the inevitable "roll up the solar system/galaxy/universe" levels for future sequels, seeing as there really wouldn't be much left to expand on after that.

This translated article by the game's designer gives some interesting background and insight:

"Katamari Damacy actually grew out of my senior thesis project for a Namco-sponsored university. Namco and Digital Hollywood (a digital arts school) collaborated on this project."

that's a cool article. I was thinking that last week along similar lines to you:

"for Katamari Damacy sequels to not become stale, they're going to have to explore new terrains; basically, places that aren't Earth-like. it would be rather cool to roll up Olympus Mons or something, or roll up black holes or supernovas."

Yeah, and think about the cool gravity physics they could work into the game if they took it to a galactic scale. Expanding novas that repel, black holes that attract...

time to revive this thing. I trust a lot of you have seen this, but:

I don't even know what to say. Nintendo's either a genius or stupid, and I'm heavily leaning towards stupid.

also, Katamari Damacy for PSP:

there's a bunch of other news stories around, but those seem to be the two that would interest the newsgroup the most.

That thing is gonna suck up batteries like a mofo.

I don't know. If the battery problem is considered, it looks absolutely beautiful. If it works like the reviewers say, then it's going to be an amazing little piece of work. With the exception of the Virtual Boy and the N64, I've always been widely impressed with Nintendo as a company.

Nintendo realizes that they can't compete directly with Sony and Microsoft, so they're going the niche route. Witness Nintendogs on the DS. While I have no doubt that the people who were going to buy a Revolution haven't changed their minds, this controller is not going to win any new sales from people who would be curious about the third console. How exactly are you going to play Zelda, Mario, or Mario Kart with that thing? Answer: you won't.

I disagree. I know countless people who have told me they no longer want a Revolution thanks to that.. thing. most people I know want a Revolution for Zelda, Mario, Metroid, Kart, SSB, etc. I cannot imagine having four friends sitting there with their remote controls playing Kart together. the mere idea just makes me laugh.

and on the other side of the fence...

The Revolution will be the only new console that I will be purchasing on launch date, and this new controller only firmed up that belief. Both the PS3 and the Xbox 360 only look like prettier, faster versions of the exact same thing I already have. Why do I need them when my PS2 and Xbox already do everything I want them too? *This* is something geniunely new.
